Introduction

Fishing is one of the most popular skills in Runescape. The skill is open to both free players and members alike, although the higher-end fish are only available to members. Fishing can be a very profitable skill if you stick with it, and players with a high fishing level can make a lot of money in a short time. Fishing is a good way to build up money from nothing, all you need is a simple fishing tool - a net, a lobster pot, a harpoon, etc.

Each tool allows you to perform a different style of fishing, a lobster pot allows you to catch lobsters, a harpoon allows you to spear sharks. Fishing is also an important component of the cooking skill, as it allows you to cut out the cost of buying the fish you want to cook, when you can simply catch and cook them yourself, you will often find that high level fishers have high cooking levels also.

In some cases, you may also find it more efficient to simply bank your raw fish as you catch them, whilst some people find it easier to catch a full inventory, cook them, then bank them. This is all down to personal preference, and sometimes the distance from the range to the bank is short enough to allow this.

Getting Started

At the start, the only thing you can fish are shrimp. To catch these you need to buy a net. Shrimp is only found in saltwater, so they cannot be caught in rivers. A good place to catch shrimp is the coastline south of Draynor Village. To fish, (left) click on the "fishing spot" in the water. Once caught they can be cooked in the usual ways. More options can be found if you right click, like this:

Levels 1-19: Fish Shrimp at the fishing spots south of Draynor Village. Cook the fish as you go, then put them in your bank if you wish to use them later, but don't hope to sell them, most players prefer to buy higher healing items.

Levels 20-39: Fish for trout and salmon (when you can catch them) by fly-fishing (need feathers) to the east of barbarian village by the bridge. Cook your fish (either by making your own fire, in Edgeville, or not at all, then put them in your bank (the closest is located to the north in Edgeville). Also if you wish you may catch Tuna with a harpoon at Karamja, although it is unlikely that you will progress much in levels. For Members, the best place for fishing experience in the entire game is to fly-fish at Shilo Village, players well into their 90's will still frequent it because of its speed for fishing.

Levels 40-49: Fish for lobsters at Karamja dock. Either cook them there, drop any burnt lobsters, and fish for more and cook those till you have a full load to take back to the bank in Draynor. If you are after experience and not so much the lobsters, you gain experience the fastest by fishing trout and salmon.

Levels 50-59: Fish for swordfish at Karamja dock. When you are near full with just swordfish, cook them. Any you burn drop, and fish for some more until you get a full load of cooked swordfish to Draynor Bank. Some players prefer to continue fishing for lobsters until around level 60, when they can catch swordfish at a decent rate.

Levels 60-75At level 60, Members can access the fishing guild, however the fishing rate (speed at which you can catch fish) is still fairly slow and is very low on experience. Many will continue to fly-fish until well past this level in order to improve their ability to catch fish.

Levels 76-99 Members can now catch sharks, however once again your fishing rate will be slow until you reach the mid-80's. Many players choose now to 'cash-in' so to speak, and fish purely for profit (sharks and lobsters), while a few will continue to fly-fish until reaching a level they are comfortable with.
